New Beginnings~ A Healthy Start for Baby

Updated: 3 hours ago

Self-care is never more important than when you are expecting a baby. Studies show that mothers who receive pre-natal care have better birth outcomes. On World Health Day, April 7, 2025, the World Health Organization is starting a yearlong campaign to make better outcomes for mothers and babies in all areas of the world. Here in our area, we have access to more than just the bare minimum.

In the United States we have so many choices for care when expecting. You can choose between an obstetrician or midwife. You also have the choice of birth setting, hospital, home, or birth center. There are countless books on the subject. Pregnant women have access to classes on birthing methods and breastfeeding. We are lucky. As a mother of five, I have a little bit of insight on extra care that women have access to.

There are so many changes that occur during pregnancy, it is difficult for a body to make all the adjustments without some discomfort. Additional weight in the breasts and abdomen cause a shift in the center of gravity and may cause back pain. Massage therapy aids in relaxation and reduction in muscle fatigue during pregnancy. It helps to lower blood pressure and reduce stress. It is a moment of self-care for the person who is growing another life.

In addition, practicing yoga and other pre-natal exercise classes are important for maintaining flexibility, balance, and strength as your body changes. Increased fluid volume, weight, and hormonal changes cause not only physical stress but emotional stress as well. Exercise is important to manage stress in all forms.

The practice of meditation during pregnancy, and in all times of life, can train your body to release tension on demand. Combined with breath work meditation used during delivery can lower the need for pain medications and reduce physical and emotional stress. It assists in bringing your mind into the moment, while releasing worry.

Just like you work at learning breathing techniques for yourself, you and your partner can learn the art of infant massage. It is a nurturing way of bonding with your newest family member. It encourages good sleep, reduces gassiness, and can help with any constipation issues.

Before conception, during pregnancy, and post-partum proper nutrition is vital for mother and infant. A balanced diet of nutrient dense whole foods is best. No matter what dietary regimen you might follow, carnivore, vegetarian, etc., doing so with the least processed ingredients will get the most nutrition where it is needed.

Here is where I must add disclaimers. Before starting any exercise program or dietary changes, please consult with your physician~ especially when pregnant. Be well, be blessed, and enjoy your new beginning with intention.
